What Is a Michigan Window Tint Medical Exemption?

A medical exemption under MCL §257.709(3) is a physician-certified document that legally authorizes you to have aftermarket tint on your front side windows in Michigan.

This is critically important in Michigan because the state completely prohibits any aftermarket tint on front side windows. Unlike most states that set a minimum VLT percentage, Michigan bans all aftermarket film on front windows outright. A medical exemption is the only legal exception. Back and rear windows can already be any darkness without an exemption.

Who Qualifies in Michigan?

You may qualify if you have a medical condition causing photosensitivity or UV vulnerability. Michigan's demographics make several conditions especially prevalent:

Lupus / SLE (elevated in Detroit’s Black community — Henry Ford Health rheumatology)
Multiple Sclerosis (high rates in Great Lakes region — U of M MS Center)
Photophobia / light sensitivity
Migraines (U of M Headache & Neuropathic Pain Clinic)
Melanoma / skin cancer (U of M Rogel Cancer Center)
Cataracts (significant SE Michigan elderly population)
Glaucoma
Albinism
Rosacea
Psoriasis
LASIK / PRK recovery
Keratoconus
Dry eye syndrome
Epilepsy (photosensitive)
Vitiligo
Macular degeneration

This is not exhaustive. Any condition causing photosensitivity or UV vulnerability may qualify. View our full list of qualifying conditions.

Michigan veterans at Camp Grayling and Selfridge ANGB with service-connected photosensitivity conditions also qualify.
